As part of its Outback Outreach Campaign, Honda Australia is sending qualified technicians into some of the country’s most remote areas in its commitment to repair all Honda vehicles subject to the biggest car recall in history.
After learning that Thursday Island and Horn Island, North of Cape York, were home to a number of Honda vehicles affected by the recall, Honda Australia worked with its local Cairns dealership – Trinity Auto Group to send a qualified Honda technician to the isolated area to complete the replacements.

Honda Australia Director, Mr. Stephen Collins, said: “We are committed to reaching our target of 100% completion rate of all affected vehicles as soon as possible. This means with the support of our dealer network we will travel to wherever we need to across the country to repair free of charge every Honda customer’s car.”

The Thursday Island trip involved working with a local mechanics workshop who provided the visiting Honda technician room to work on the Honda vehicles, some of which had been ferried over from neighbouring Horn Island. Thursday Island is almost 2,500 kilometres by road from Brisbane, Queensland, and 800 kilometres by road from Cairns.

The magnitude of the repair program is not lost on the company who have a dedicated team trying to reach every single affected Honda vehicle owner, and book them in as soon as possible.

“One of our biggest challenges is ensuring we have all affected customers in our database,” he said. “Our active customer completion rate is 99 per cent and our overall completion rate is currently sitting at 83 per cent. The customers we are yet to reach are those who do not service through the Honda dealer network or current contact details aren’t known to the company.”

Currently more than 540,000 inflator repairs have been completed but there are still more than 100,000 inflators still to be replaced in Honda vehicles across the country.

“Any Honda customers who are still unsure about the status of their vehicle should check the Honda recall website, and also ensure the company has their latest contact details”, Mr. Collins said. “Thursday Island is just one of many remote locations that we are sending our people to, to ensure we do everything we possibly can to protect our Honda customers.”

Other towns in the Outback Outreach campaign include Mount Isa, Kununurra, Exmouth, Karratha, Port Hedland, Broome, Newman, Esperance, Tom Price, Port Augusta, Port Pirie, Broken Hill and Tennant Creek in the Northern Territory.
