When you purchase a brand new set of standard tyres they can come with a tread depth between 8 and 9mm - just under a centimetre. This can change depending on the type of tyre you’re using (e.g. 4WD tyres)
It may not seem like much, but when your tyre tread is worn down to the minimum there is a massive difference in the wet weather grip of your tyres.

Minimum tyre tread depth in Australia
So what is the legally allowable minimum tyre tread depth in Australia?
1.5mm.
Anything lower than 1.5mm of tyre tread depth and your car is classified as ‘unroadworthy’ by the relevant state authority.
Depending on the relevant authority you are at risk of receiving a large fine or loss of demerit points.
The reason behind having a minimum tyre tread depth is due to the increased stopping distances that are a result of balding or bald tyres. When tyres lose their tread, their ability to dispel water lowers, resulting in it taking longer to stop when driving in wet conditions.
While 1.5mm is the legal minimum for tyre tread depth, we recommend considering changing your tyres as soon as possible once your tyre tread depth equals 3mm.
How to measure tyre tread depth
There’s no hidden secret on checking tyre tread depth. In fact, there are a few different ways that you can do it.

Check the tyre tread wear indicator: Probably the simplest method of checking tyre tread depth. Each tyre contains little blocks that sit within the tyre tread. Once the tyre tread reaches 1.5mm, the tyre tread wear indicator will appear level with the tyre indicating it has reached its minimum depth.

Purchase a tyre tread depth indicator: Available at most auto parts stores, a tyre tread depth indicator is a simple tool that you can use to get the exact measurement of the tyre tread depth.

The coin trick: Using a 10c coin, you can place the coin in the tyre tread groove. If the outside band on the coin is still obscured by the groove, then it’s still legal. You can also do the same trick with a 20c coin and if the platypus’ bill is obscured, then the tyre tread is deeper than 3mm.
What to do if the tyre tread is below the minimum depth
So what do you do if the tyre tread depth is below the legal minimum - 1.5mm?
If your tyre tread is below 1.5mm cease driving the car immediately. Not only is it unsafe to be on the road but it is also illegal.
Contact an authorised mechanic or your local Honda Tyre Centre and discuss the possibility of having the car towed to a destination where new tyres can be installed.
