ABOUT THE RECALL
Why are Takata airbags being recalled?
Takata airbag inflators that use non-desiccated Phase Stabilised Ammonium Nitrate (PSAN) as the propellant are affected by the recall. The PSAN propellant becomes unstable over time if subjected to high heat and humidity. If deployed during an accident, airbag inflators containing PSAN may rupture due to excessive internal pressure. If this happens, metal fragments could possibly shoot out, straight through the airbag cushion material towards the vehicle occupants causing serious injury or fatality.
Which airbags are affected?
Driver and/or passenger frontal airbags in vehicles that are fitted with Takata airbag inflators that use non-desiccated PSAN are affected by the recall.
What is ammonium nitrate?
Ammonium nitrate is the chemical used by Takata as the propellant to inflate the airbag in the event of an accident.
Why do heat & humidity affect my recalled
Scientific analysis in the U.S. determined that the ammonium nitrate propellant used in recalled Takata airbag inflators that did not contain a moisture-absorbing desiccant can degrade over time, particularly when exposed to years of high heat and absolute humidity, typical in parts of Australia. This propellant degradation may cause the airbag inflator to rupture in the event of an accident.
How can I find out if my vehicle is subject to a Takata airbag recall?
To check if your Honda vehicle is affected, please enter your Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) or registration number into the Honda Australia “Check my Honda” tool.

Customers will first be notified by mail. Honda Australia will then contact customers using other communication methods including email, phone and SMS where Honda Australia has the relevant contact information available.
Do I have to wait for Honda Australia to contact me to before I can have my airbag replaced?
If your vehicle is under active recall, you do not have to wait. Please call the Honda Australia Recall Contact Centre on 1800 789 839 (free call) Monday to Friday 8:30am to 6:00pm AEST to book your vehicle for repair, or contact your preferred Authorised Honda Dealer.

How will customers that purchased their vehicle second-hand be notified if the vehicle is affected by an airbag recall?
Honda Australia gathers information from its own database and a national database from the road traffic authorities around Australia. We are also working with other 3rd party organisations to identify and notify owners of second-hand vehicles where we are able to obtain correct contact information. Any information that Honda Australia obtains from 3rd parties is used only to contact customers for the purpose of conducting the Takata recalls, and is not otherwise stored in Honda Australia’s database or used for any other purpose. We encourage owners of any used Honda vehicle to check if their vehicle is affected by using the “Check My Honda” tool above, and follow the prompts.
What should I do if my vehicle was a grey/private import?
If you own a vehicle that has been personally imported into Australia (sometimes known as a grey or parallel import), please present the vehicle to an authorised Honda Dealer. Alternatively, contact the Honda Australia Recall Contact Centre on 1800 789 839 (free call) Monday to Friday 8:30am to 6:00pm AEST for further information. Please note that grey/parallel import VINs will not be recognised on the “Check my Honda” page on the Honda Australia website as they do not exist in the Honda Australia database.
My vehicle is listed as being subject to a ‘future’ recall, what does this mean?
This means that your vehicle is not yet currently under an active recall, but it will be in the future. In accordance with the Mandatory Recall, Honda Australia will initiate the recall of your vehicle in the future. The Honda Australia Recall Initiation Schedule specifies the dates on which the future recalls will become active.
I already had my driver/passenger airbag inflator replaced previously, why do I need to do it again?
Vehicles that had airbag inflator recalls completed earlier on in the Takata airbag recall were fitted with a new PSAN Takata airbag inflator. At that time, the cause of misdeployment was not understood. When Honda Australia became aware that these inflators were to be recalled again in the future, it ceased the use of replacement Takata airbag inflators. Unfortunately, these inflators will need to be replaced in the future in accordance with the Honda Australia Recall Initiation Schedule. Honda Australia will contact you once the planned future recall of your vehicle becomes active. Please ensure your contact details remain up to date so that Honda Australia can contact you to facilitate replacement.

What is an airbag inflator?
The airbag inflator is a device inside the airbag that contains a propellant that inflates the airbag in the event of an accident.

Takata Corporation manufactured the airbags that are affected by the airbag inflator recall.
What is an “Alpha” airbag inflator?
An Alpha airbag inflator has a higher risk of rupturing in the event of an accident. This is due to a known manufacturing fault significantly increasing the risk of rupture. The rupture rate can be as high as 50% for an Alpha inflator, therefore a higher chance of serious injury of fatality. If your vehicle is fitted with an Alpha inflator, please contact the Honda Australia Recall Call Centre immediately to book your vehicle in for repair. Are Honda Australia still using Takata inflators to repair vehicles under this recall?
No, Takata airbag inflators are no longer used by Honda Australia to replace parts under this recall.
Are Honda Australia still using Takata inflators in their new vehicles?
No, Honda do not use Takata airbags in any of their new vehicles.
Do inflators supplied by the alternative suppliers use the same ammonium nitrate propellant as Takata?
No, alternative suppliers do not use ammonium nitrate as the propellant for their airbag inflators.
Do airbags or their inflators have limits to their operation life?
There is no limited life span of an airbag. Airbags and all restraint system components are intended to perform as designed for life of the vehicle.
How will my vehicle be repaired?
The affected Takata airbag inflator inside the airbag assembly will be replaced with a new replacement inflator supplied by a different manufacturer. Replacements are free to all Honda customers, and you can have your recalled airbag inflator replaced at any Authorised Honda Dealer Australia wide. Can the inflator be replaced at an independent repairer?
No. The replacement part can only be fitted by an Authorised Honda Dealer, and all replacements are free.
How much will it cost to replace the airbag inflator?
An affected Takata airbag inflator will be replaced by an Authorised Honda Dealer, free of charge.
How long will it take to complete the repair?
The replacement of your airbag/s will take approximately 2-3 hours, however when making a booking, please check with your preferred Authorised Honda Dealer.
Is there anything I can do before the inflator is replaced to make it less likely to rupture?
No, there is no way to know or identify the risk of rupture for any vehicle. If your vehicle is affected by an airbag inflator recall, it is important to have it repaired as soon as possible.
Do I need to bring my recall letter to my dealer to have the airbag inflator replaced?
There is no need to take your recall letter to your appointment.
SMASH REPAIRED VEHICLES
I was in a crash and had a replacement airbag installed by a smash repairer. How can I tell if the replacement airbag is an affected Takata airbag?
If the replacement airbag installed in your vehicle by the smash repairer is a Takata PSAN airbag inflator, it may be faulty. Initially, we encourage you to contact the business that replaced your airbag and ask what type of airbag was fitted into your vehicle and where it was purchased from. If the airbag was purchased from an Authorised Honda Dealer, we will be able to identify if it requires replacement. Alternately, you can take your vehicle to any Authorised Honda Dealer who can check the type of airbag inflator that is installed in your vehicle.

I am a secondhand dealer / auction house what should I do?
Honda Australia recommends that you check if any Honda vehicle in your possession is subject to an ‘active’ or ‘future’ Takata recall by entering the VIN or registration number into the “Check my Honda” page on the Honda Australia website. You can also check if vehicles in your possession will be recalled in the future by viewing the Honda Australia Recall Initiation Schedule. I am a wrecker / salvage yard owner, what should I do?
If you are a wrecker / salvage yard owner, Honda Australia recommends that you check if any Takata airbag inflator parts in your possession are subject to a Takata recall. To check if the part is under ‘active’ or ‘future’ recall, please check the VIN of the Honda vehicle from which the part was removed, on the “Check my Honda” page of the Honda Australia website. Once confirmed, please contact the Honda Australia Recall Contact Centre on 1800 789 839 (free call) Monday to Friday 8:30am to 6:00pm AEST for further information. You will need to provide us with the vehicle VIN/s and any other relevant information to enable us to assist you.
I'm a wrecker / salvage yard operator and I have removed a Takata airbag inflator affected by the Takata airbag recalls, what should I do?
You must not sell the removed Takata inflator. Please call the dedicated wrecker / second-hand vehicle yard Honda Australia Recall Contact Centre on 1800 789 839 (free call) Monday to Friday 8:30am to 6:00pm AEST, or contact an authorised Honda Dealer to notify Honda Australia that you have such part in your possession. The Recall Call Centre/ Honda Dealer will facilitate the retrieval of the part from your possession. When calling the Recall Call Centre or an Authorised Honda Dealer you will need to provide the following details:
the name of the person or business holding the part,
relevant details of the part including quantity, type
Vehicle VIN (where possible)
any other relevant information that will assist Honda Australia to facilitate the safe retrieval of the part from your possession.
I have an un-registered vehicle in my possession, what should I do?

How do I check if a vehicle in my possession is affected by a Takata recall?
Can I sell a Honda Vehicle that is classified as being under active recall?
If you have a Honda vehicle that is under active recall you must not sell the Vehicle until the recall has been completed. Please contact the Honda Australia Recall Contact Centre on 1800 789 839 (free call) Monday to Friday 8:30am to 6:00pm AEST to book the vehicle in at your closest Authorised Honda Dealer for airbag replacement.
This will be conducted free of charge.
Can I sell a Honda vehicle that is classified as being under future recall?
You can sell a vehicle that is classified as being under ‘future’ recall provided you comply with your obligations under the ACCC Mandatory Recall Notice, including notifying the prospective purchaser that the Vehicle will be subject to a Takata recall by Honda Australia in the future.
