Learning to drive isn’t easy.

There’s a lot to take in. From learning how to operate the vehicle to remembering all the different rules of the road, it can get overwhelming at times.

We believe that the most important driving tips for learners in Australia are centred around safety. Staying safe on the road should always be your number one priority and we want to help.

Here’s 5 safety tips for learners to help keep you safe when you hit the streets. This article is for guidance only and safe driving practices should always be exercised when you get behind the wheel.

1. Make the proper adjustments

As soon as you enter your vehicle, before you even turn on the engine, make sure that you check all the equipment and make the necessary adjustments.  This can include things like.

  • Rear view mirror

  • Side mirrors

  • Seat height/incline

  • Steering wheel height and reach

Making sure this equipment is in the optimal position will give you the best possible visibility when you start driving, helping to make it safe.

2. No Multitasking

When you’re behind the wheel your focus should be on just that - being behind the wheel.

Keep all your attention on driving at all times. Even the most experienced drivers get into accidents that could have been avoided due to momentary lapses of concentration.

3. Stick to the speed limit

Speeding is one of the biggest causes of death of young drivers on Australian roads. Always stick to the speed limit regardless of what is going on around you.

Not only will you dramatically reduce the risk of an accident, but it will also help you avoid some hefty fines, or revoking of your licence.

4. BE wary of other vehicles and hazards

When you’re on the road it’s important to not only be aware of what you’re doing, but what others are doing as well.

Always keep a safe distance between yourself and the vehicle in front of you. A general rule of thumb is to maintain a distance of 6 car lengths.

Another matter to be wary of is staying out of other vehicle’s blind spots (A blind spot is the point behind a vehicle where another car cant be seen by looking through the rear or side mirror). Be wary of other vehicles on the road and if you are sitting in someone's blind spot, safely move your vehicle so that you are visible.

Also be wary of pedestrians especially around schools or busy locations.

5. Keep an eye on road signs

Road signs are there for a reason so keep an eye out for them.

This one might seem obvious, but it can be easy to get distracted. Missing a stop sign or misreading a speed limit sign can increase the chance of an accident as well as an expensive fine.
