Five Pieces Of Car Tech That Didn’t Exist Ten Years Ago

Car technology has come along way in the past decade. Read all about five brand new pieces of car tech that didn't exist ten years ago.

GONE ARE THE DAYS WHEN FM RADIO IN YOUR CAR WAS SOMETHING TO BRAG ABOUT. READ ON TO FIND OUT ABOUT FIVE NEW PIECES OF CAR TECH THAT DIDN'T EXIST TEN YEARS AGO.

Automotive technology has come a long way in recent years. Not only have manufacturers developed more fuel efficient, sustainable engines, but they’ve also significantly updated the technology for when you're behind the wheel.

Now when you get in the driver’s seat, it can seem like you’re about to fly the Millenium Falcon. Everything has a touch screen and it's all very responsive and automated. Just like being in a cockpit.

1. APPLE CAR PLAY™ & ANDROID AUTO™*

Apple CarPlay™ first came on the scene in 2014 and was closely followed by its counterpart, Android Auto™ in 2015.

These apps or programs enable your car’s touchscreen display to act as a type of ‘mirror’ for your mobile phone. Allowing you to access messages, call people, follow maps and more with an easy to use interface.

2. ANTI-COLLISION TECHNOLOGY

Anti-Collision tech has blown up (not literally) in the past couple of years.

Anti-Collision Technology or Crash Avoidance features are computer controlled safety features that attempt to minimise the chance of a crash when you are behind the wheel.

It varies by make and model but can include things like traction control, automatic braking, lane keep assist, stability control programs and more.

3. ADAPTIVE CRUISE CONTROL

While cruise control has been on the scene for a while, adaptive cruise control is fairly new to the market.

Unlike traditional cruise control, adaptive cruise control has the ability to set your desired speed as well as the desired distance to the vehicle in front of you.

4. REVERSING CAMERAS

Ok so we lied, reversing cameras did exist 10 years ago. In fact the first reversing camera was invented in 1956 as a part of a concept car for Buick. It consisted of a television camera mounted on the rear of the car which sent images to a TV screen in place of a rear view mirror.

We’ve come a long way from rear mounted TV cameras however, with most if not all new cars coming with a reversing camera and parking sensors.

5. PARALLEL PARKING TECHNOLOGY

Jazz 17YM Reversing Camera

Self-parking technology was created to help those who struggle with tight parallel parking manoeuvres.

The parallel parking technology works by having the onboard computer take over the vehicles controls and performing the manoeuvre for you.

This technology can be found in the Honda Odyssey as part of the Smart Parking Assist System.
