Purchasing From A Dealership: How It Works

Want to know the best questions to ask your local car dealer? Or the steps needed to buy a car? Read on to find out.

We understand car dealerships can be a little intimidating. That’s why we’ve put together this handy guide on what to ask when buying a car from a dealership.

We get it, stepping into a car dealership for the first time can be quite overwhelming.

There are cars of all shapes, sizes and colours to consider. And with a car purchase being such a massive financial commitment, you want to make sure you’re getting the best deal possible.

At Honda we do our very best to make sure you’re comfortable throughout the whole car buying process.

That's why we’ve put together this guide on what questions to ask a car dealer to help simplify the process.

What questions to ask a car dealer

As with any purchase, it’s always a good idea to do your research beforehand. In regard to a new car, there’s plenty of information online so read up ahead of time and come prepared with a set of questions to ask your car dealer.

Can you take it for a test drive?

Before you purchase a car you should always take it for a test drive. Test driving a car will give you a feel for how the car handles, how quiet it is on the road and what you’ll be experiencing when you’re behind the wheel for years to come.

What’s the warranty?

This is a big one. You want to find out as much information on the vehicle’s warranty as possible. The last thing you want is to get caught without knowing what is covered because you didn't ask the right question.

You can read all about Honda’s warranty here.

What’s the servicing offer?

An added benefit to purchasing a brand new vehicle is that it may come with free scheduled servicing for a set amount of time or distance travelled. Like Honda’s 3 year free scheduled servicing.^

Double check what’s on offer with the dealer in regard to free scheduled servicing and make sure you read through all the terms and conditions.

What's included in the driveaway price?

Most car dealers advertise a drive away price with all new vehicles. What this means is you pay the price quoted and the car is yours - no more to pay, ready to drive off the lot. It’s important to check what’s included in the drive away price. Things like registration period can vary so do your research.

Is the car at the dealership?

This one might sound a bit silly but try to make sure that the car you test drive is going to be the same one that you purchase. If you’re having your new vehicle tailor made to suit your needs (e.g colour and accessories) then make sure you take it for a test drive before you leave the dealership.

What are your finance options?

Lastly, if you’re planning on financing your new car, ask the dealer what financing options are available to you. There are plenty of options for car loans so do your research to ensure you get the best deal available and whether a car loan is right for you.

Steps to buying a car from a dealership

As well as knowing the right questions to ask your car dealer, it’s important to know what steps to follow when visiting a dealer.

Keep in mind these steps are just a suggestion and don’t have to be followed word for word.

Set A Budget

First things first, determine an appropriate budget that suits your needs. Everyone has a different budget depending on their needs and current financial situation so determine yours so you understand what is and isn't available to you.

Take a test drive

Next, make sure you take a test drive so you can be sure that you know exactly what you’re getting. Get a feel for how the car drives and keep an ear out for any unusual sounds.

Bring A Knowledgeable Friend

If possible, bring a friend or family member along that you trust and is mechanically savvy. This person can have a look over the car and put your mind at ease if you’re unsure about any mechanical issues.

Think About It

One of the more important steps is to take time to think about your purchase! Don’t jump into any rushed decisions and if you need to, sleep on it. Purchasing a new car is a massive decision and one that shouldn’t be taken lightly. There’s nothing wrong with taking a day or two.

Sign The Papers

When you’re finally happy, content and ready to go, it’s time to sign those papers. Your dealer will guide you through this process and ensure all the necessary paperwork is signed and accounted for.
